O monumento mais famoso de Lisboa ergue-se do Tejo, de onde protegia e cidade quando foi construído no século XVI.
É uma bela fortaleza que também serviu de ponto de partida para muitas das viagens da época dos Descobrimentos, e o seu significado histórico juntamente com a singularidade da sua arquitetura levaram à sua distinção como Património Mundial.

Mãe D’Água Amoreiras Reservoir

This reservoir, called “Mãe D’Água”, translated “Mother of the Water”, is a jewel unknown to tourists. It’s the old city reservoir, not in use anymore. Nowadays it’s open for visitors and for special occasions, such as private parties or an art exhibitions.

Aqueduto das Áquas Livres

The aqueduct was built between 1732 and 1748 and spans 36 miles, bridging the Alcantara valley via a series of 35 arches. At the time of construction, the arches were the world’s tallest, and they remain a formidable sight to this day, having survived the massive 1755 earthquake.

Palácio Nacional de Sintra

The lone surviving royal residence from the medieval age. The massive structure is accented by its two enormous conical chimneys. It originated in the 11th century as a Moorish palace, undergoing additions in the 15th and 16th centuries. Renowned for housing the world’s greatest collection of Mudejar tiles, as well as for its beautiful hanging gardens, courtyard and chapel.

Known as the “little Versailles,” this stately palace hails from the 17th century, having been the former residence of Marques de Castelo Rodrigo. Later incarnations included a tour as the summer home for Portuguese royalty, as well as the residence of Maria I. Lavishly Baroque interior remains a testament to a bygone era. Especially striking is the throne room — a concert hall during the Sintra Classical Music Festival

Construction began in 1802 but was halted upon the arrival of Napoleon’s troops in 1807. The next 50 years saw further sporadic work, yet the palace was never fully realized. It was, however, the royal residence during the 18th and 19th centuries and now houses a museum and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Stroll through two floors of romantic period decor and be sure to take in the particularly stunning throne room.

Aqui prosperam belas árvores dos quatro cantos do Mundo. Foi uma delas, a Magnolia grandiflora, natural da América do Norte, que lhe emprestou o nome. Notável é a colecção de palmeiras. As lauráceas também estão bem representadas, com as quatro espécies indígenas.

São particularmente bonitas as frondosas canforeiras localizadas junto ao relvado central.

Quinta das Cruzes

The Monte Palace Museum

The Monte Palace Museum is an ideal exhibition space nestled within the beautiful surroundings of a tropical garden. There are three floors, two of which are dedicated to sculptures and the third houses a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world.

The exposition entitled ‘African Passion’ shows part of a collection of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture from the period 1966 to 1969. More than a 1000 sculptures are distributed on two floors of the museum. The top floor concentrates on individual creations, allowing the viewer time to observe the characteristics and workmanship of each artist. The second floor captures the environment in which these talented men and women work in order to create and display their sculptures to the world.

‘Mother Nature’s Secrets’, on the lower floor, proudly exhibits one of the finest private collections of minerals, predominately from Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Peru, Argentina and North America. From more than a 1000 specimens, around 700 have been specially chosen for display. Some specimens are displayed in hollows designed to imitate the environment in which the minerals form in the depths of our planet, whilst others are “suspended in air” to give the sensation of a planetary space where rocky masses gravitate freely. Also for your enjoyment is an exhibition of more than 300 semiprecious and precious gems, with a particular focus on diamonds, both rough and cut.
